ONCOLOGY

Dr. Sara Korsunsky is a Naturopathic Doctor who uses the Metabolic Approach to treating cancer.  This new and cutting-edge method, created by Dr. Nasha Winters ND,  assesses each person wishing to treat or prevent cancer for strengths and weaknesses in health. The assessments are very thorough and enable Dr. Korsunsky to build a personalized plan that fights cancer using natural and if desired, conventional medicines, and is tailored to the individual’s health history and cancer risk factors, genetics, and lab tests results.

Patients using the Metabolic Approach to Cancer feel empowered and full of life, despite their diagnoses, which are often late-stage cancer. They understand how to evaluate their lab tests and progress, and can make appropriate treatment choices for themselves with Dr. Korsunsky’s guidance. The program dives deeply into each patients’ health and asks patients to make changes to their diets, vitamins and supplements, medical treatments, and lifestyle and undergo monthly lab testing so that their health can be evaluated and updates made regularly.  No stone is left unturned in the evaluation and improvement plan.  It is designed for those who are ready to explore and learn and do hard work for better outcomes, and it creates true health and wellbeing.

Dr. Korsunsky was the first Canadian doctor to graduate from the Metabolic Approach to Cancer’s Mastermind Program. It has changed the way she views health and medicine for the better, and she is excited to bring it to her fellow Manitobans who are looking for more than what our provincial medical oncology system offers.  Dr. Korsunsky also offers IV therapy, medical ozone treatments, traditional Chinese Acupuncture, and more in a clinic setting.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and yet we have been fighting “the War on Cancer” since 1971 with little true success. Nearly 1 in 2 Canadians is expected to develop cancer during their lifetime. About 1 out of 4 Canadians (26% of men and 23% of women) is expected to die from cancer. This is unacceptable!

Cancer is one of humanity’s greatest challenges. As a process, it is cunning and relentless, and pharmaceuticals and radiation are not enough to help our species survive with or overcome this terrible disease. The use of natural medicines and standard cancer treatments has shown to improve outcomes and improve quality of life and longevity, but it is not enough, and the reality is that a new approach is needed.

As an experienced naturopathic doctor, I am trained in natural techniques to fight cancer and improve the health of the body. Since pursuing specialized training in the US with renowned physician (and patient) Dr. Nasha Winters N.D., Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology I have chosen a more modern and scientific yet holistic path with my cancer patients, known as the Metabolic Approach. Science and medical arts are moving towards a new paradigm of health that will have patient’s body conditions, or terrain, in center of the arena. Assessing what is happening in real time, including function and toxic burden as well as capacity to detoxify and repair DNA is key to improving outcomes.

What is the Metabolic Approach to Cancer ?

The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is a medical method that systematically tests for and evaluates strengths and weaknesses and treats based on the individual’s needs. In treating and preventing cancers, this allows both Doctor and patient to understand the ways the body has been challenged over the course of time, and work to correct them.

What to expect;

Once you book an initial Oncology Visit online, you will receive several detailed forms to complete about your health. I will evaluate these and a Terrain Ten Questionnaire that helps me to evaluate the top areas of your health that need support. These include your body’s:

1. Genetics

2. Toxins

3. Blood Sugar Balance

4. Microbiome (health of gut bacteria) and digestion

5. Immunity

6. Inflammation

7. Hormones

8. Angiogenesis and Circulation

9. Stress

10. Mental/ Emotional Health

Initially, very thorough bloodwork is done to determine what is happening in your body (Ie inflammation, immune function), and specialty lab testing is prescribed to assess your weakest three terrain areas.

Following the receipt of the blood tests and a thorough assessment of your current health, a plan is made to address the weaknesses with natural medicines that are science-based and effective. Each month we check bloodwork to monitor your progress, tweaking and changing the plan as we go.

Cancer is smart, it will mutate and evolve, and the monthly blood assessments help us to determine if cancer is driving the car or the body is in control, whether there are tumours or no evidence of disease. As we collect more information, finally evaluating each of the 10 terrain areas within the first 3-6 months, we are able to understand the patterns of the body and the activity of the cancer process and can then modify the treatment plan as needed for the best outcomes. The STRENGTH of the Terrain Ten Approach is it is extremely deep and thorough, so that no stone about your health is left unturned, and the diet and medicines can be tailored and modified to suit your genes, and your needs.

What about Surgery, Chemo or Radiation?

A plan may or may not include standard care therapies such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Mostly, these are discussed based on your test results. Testing can tell me if your cancer will respond well or poorly to radiation. Similarly, precision medicine can test to tell us which chemotherapeutics or targeted therapies would be of value to you, if any. Precision medicine involves tissue or blood biopsies to study the genetics of your cancer cells, and is currently not offered by Manitoba Health.
